Forty minutes into Chris Tucker’s Netflix special and I gave up. Although I could only get through half of his show, I predicted that I was not going to get any thoughtful material from him. He was just clowning too much. Sorry Chris.

Đang trong hóa trình làm dự án về đề tài Vietnamese Typography. Tạm dịch là Nghệ Thuật Chữ Việt. Bạn nào có ý kiến hay hơn xin cho biết. Với cái hóa trình này tôi muốn giúp những nhà thiết kế chữ (nhất là những người nước ngoài) làm ra những sản phẩm có phông chữ Việt Nam để thiết kế bằng tiếng Viết sẽ trở nên phong phú hơn.

Vì Quốc Ngữ của chúng ta dùng chữ Latin nên chỉ cần hiểu cặn kẻ cách đánh dấu là có thể sáng tác ra được phông chữ Việt. Dỉ nhiên điều quan trọng là làm sao khi viết ra chữ Việt nó cũng sẽ đẹp và gọn ghẽ nhưng chữ Latin. Ví dụ như chữ bạn đang đọc tên là Arno Pro của Robert Slimbach, một nhà thiết kế tài giỏi của Adobe. Tuy ông không phải là người Việt Nam nhưng nhờ có những người như ổng chúng ta mới có phong chữ Việt Nam đẹp và dể đọc. Các bạn đọc ở đây có ai biết nhà thiết kế chữ người Việt Nam không? Nếu có cho mình tên và cách liên lạc nhé.

Khi bắt đầu nghiên cứu về đề tài này tôi không kiếm được tài liệu qua sách vở chỉ. Tôi chỉ tìm được vài trang web trên mạng. Nhờ học hỏi và hiểu biết nhiều về typography và biết được tiếng Việt nên tôi cũng ráng theo đuổi. Rất cám ơn hai người bạn Linh và Trang đã giúp tôi rất nhiều trong việc đọc và sửa chữa lại bài viết của tôi. Cả hai điều giỏi cả hai thứ tiếng hơn tôi nên tôi rất may mắn.

This site is going through another restyling within two months. While I love experimenting with setting white text on black background for a change, my taste is the reverse. For this redesign, I keep the layout almost intact, but the typography is completely new.

Because I am moving away from images, the typefaces need to communicate both as visual aesthetic as well as functionality. In addition, the type must display correct Vietnamese writing; therefore, I am investing heavily in fonts in term of performance. The main typeface is Arno Pro, designed by Robert Slimbach. Because I need to use Vietnamese characters, which increased the font size tremendously, I might as well take advantage of discretionary ligatures in Arno Pro. The headings are set in big, beautiful Proxima Nova Extra Condensed, designed by Mark Simonson. As for the branding, I am loving the gorgeous Acta Poster Swashes, designed by Dino dos Santos.

For font delivery, I am now using the Web Font Loader method. In the previous version, I used Typekit’s default delivery because I could not stand the flash of unstyled text (FOUT). I changed my mind early this month when I was vacationing in a rental house with limited internet connection. My website was blank for over 30 seconds or so in a slow connection. I am now OK with the FOUT as long as the content is not blocked.

For the work section, I am bringing back SVG to create big visual impact with small file size. I am now combining all my school and personal projects as well as my book collection into the more section. Those contents are probably more for me than my visitors, but just in case you are interested. My other reason for gathering them in one place is to simplify so that when I want to redesign this site, which I hope to do more often, I could easily do so. I only have to deal with three pages instead of five or six. I even abandon my Google custom search for DuckDuckGo. That way I don’t have to deal with the search page anymore. That’s it. I hope you like the new changes.

On several occasions, my three-year-old son corrected my word choice. I am both amused and grateful.

Me: You just spit on me.
Đán: You mean sneeze on you?

Me: Look at those dinosaur bones.
Đán: You mean fossils?

Although showcasing types at large sizes make the visual layouts look attractive, body text should have been included in the specimens. Nevertheless, the wide range of selections with short explainations make it a decent reference for choosing and combining types.

In this brilliant guide, Lea Verou unveils the rare power of CSS that lets designers create stunning visual effects beyond the popular elements. With her extensive knowledge of CSS and her clarity in technical explanation, Verou provides practical solutions that are easy to achieve with just a few lines of CSS. Even though I personally don’t use many of the techniques, such as complex background patterns and drop shadows, they help me understand what CSS can accomplish without the need for JavaScript. CSS Secrets is a must-have reference for web designers and developers.

After eleven years of reviewing music on this site, I am calling it quit. Writing about music started out as a hobby from a passionate listener and it took up a chunk of my time to listen, analyze, and write. When I was still single and lived by myself, I had all the time in the world to kill. With a family, I don’t have that luxury anymore, but I kept at it. I must admit, I haven’t spent as much time as once had on reviewing an album. I would spend an hour the most on a piece and the results showed.

As much as I have been addicted to listening and writing music, I am getting burned out. The last piece took me almost three hours on an early Sunday morning to just to get down 530 words. I could have had spent that time sleeping with my kids or doing something else.

Why am I writing this post and not just quit quietly? I tried to stop many times, but I kept on telling myself: “This will be the last review.” Whenever I heard something excited me, I just couldn’t wait to write and share about it. I am now making it official with this post to remind myself that I need to let it go.

I don’t know how many people still read my reviews anymore, but I want to thank you for stopping by. I also want to apologize to all the musicians I had offended. It was not intentional. I just wanted to push the art, especially Vietnamese music, to a higher level. Nevertheless, I do appreciate you do what you do to bring us joy, pleasure, and emotional experiences.

Khi thấy bài hát “Gội Đầu” do Khánh Ly trình bảy, tôi  tò mò nghe thử. Quả nhiên đây không phải là một ca khúc nói về việc làm vệ sinh nhàm chán. Nhất là với những lời thơ sâu lắng: “Gội đầu mà gội đầu. Gội cái dầu chua lè / Gội cái đầu cay sè / Gội sạch nhé / Gội cho ngày sau nhìn ra nhau.” Thi nhạc sĩ Trần Dạ Từ dùng từ “gội đầu” để nhắc nhở chúng ta rửa sạch những chua cay trong trí óc nhất là tình cảm con người dành cho nhau.

Gội Đầu/Bay là tên album đôi gồm 23 ca khúc của thi nhạc sĩ Trần Dạ Từ được trình diển qua hai giọng hát chính của hai thế hẹ khác nhau: Khánh Ly và Thương Linh. Với sự trải nghiệm trong giọng ca và cuộc sống, Khánh Ly mang lại những nỗi niềm chất chứa, đặc biệt qua bài “Cám Ơn Dế Mèn” khi nói về những chuỗi ngày tù đày: “Một mùa mưa gió / Có anh dế mèn phất phơ / Lạc vào cát-xô / Đùa vui với người tù.”

Với tâm trạng một người tù chính trị ông viết lên hai ca khúc chia sẽ bi kịch của đất nước Việt Nam: “Ném Con Cho Giông Tố” và “Tấm Lòng Phan Rang.” Cả hai được thể hiển rất tốt qua hai giọng hát nam trầm buồn và nhiều cảm xúc. Với tiếng kèn soprano sax, Quang Tuấn tâm sự: “Giông tố giông tố ngoài khơi xa / Ta gửi ngươi. Ta gửi ngươi con ta / Xương thịt ta. Tâm hồn ta. Hy vọng ta.” Với giọng hát đầy chất lữa, Nguyên Khang kể lại câu chuyện của những người tù trong đoàn xe bít bùng được ném lên: “Từng điếu thuốc. Từng lát đương… Từng gói bắp. Từng vắt cơm.”

Nhạc Trần Dạ Từ không chỉ nặng về ca từ mà giai điệu cũng rất đa dạng. Với phần hòa âm đặc sắc của Hoàng Công Luận và Billie Wolf, Thương Linh “Bay và Rơi” qua điệu bossa nova, tung tăng trong nhịp swing qua “Tôi Bắt Đầu Bay,” và sầu lắng với chất blues qua “Em Đi Với Con Thơ” và “Saigon Blues.” Riêng “Make Me Your Guitar” cho thấy sự lãng mạng của Trần Dạ Từ qua lời ca Anh. Với giọng hát sương khói được hộ tống bởi tiếng đàn guitar mọc mạc, Thương Linh bày tỏ nhẹ nhàng nhưng đầy khiêu gợi: “Oh no, oh please, stroke me softly / Caress me gently til my soul hums in your ears.”

Ngoài ra một sáng tác đặc sắc của Trần Dạ Từ là “Gọi Tên Dòng Sông” được phối hợp lời cùng những dòng thơ như Mai Thảo, Nguyên Sa và Du Tử Lê vào giai điệu của Phạm Duy và Trần Dạ. Lối trình bài của Tuấn Ngọc và Thương Linh cùng giàn nhạc (đa số do người Mỹ đảm nhiệm) khá độc đáo. Đã lâu mới được nghe một album hải ngoại được thu âm với ban nhạc sống và được đầu tư kỹ lưỡng trong phần hòa âm. Gội Đầu/Bay là bộ album giá trị nghệ thuật nên su tầm.

In addition to celebrating Independence Day, the Fourth of July marks 60 days into the launch of my independent web-based book titled Professional Web Typography. I wrote about the economics of the book in its first 30 days and now I am providing some updates on its next 30 days.

At this point, the buzz around the book has subsided. Between May and June, according to Google Analytics, the sessions plummeted from 18,075 to 4,802; the users decreased from 11,578 to 2,233; and the pageviews plunged from 50,399 to 10,014. The number of payments had dropped from 76 to 20. On the positive side, the lowest payment is $5 compared to $0.01 from last month. As stated in previous announcement, I would send a PDF version of the book to support of $7 or more. As a result, most of the payments are $7. 

I am expecting to see even less traffic in the future. Nevertheless, it has been a good experiment and I appreciate all the support.
