Khi nhìn bìa Tiếng Hát Hà Vân tôi tưởng là một album củ mà chưa hề nghe qua cái tên Hà Vân. Khi nghe thì mới biết đây là một đỉa nhạc mới được dàn dựng lại theo thiệp niên 60 và 70. Không những chỉ về thiết kế bìa đĩa mà luôn cả cách hát và phần hòa âm phối khí.

Khác với nhiều ca sĩ hiện tại hát lại dòng nhạc trữ tình với hòa âm mới, Hà Vân giữ nguyên bản phối củ. Kết quả là album của cô nghe rất có hồn vì đã được thu âm trực tiếp cùng ban nhạc chứ không phải những bản hòa âm đã được phối trước. Với tiếng kèn trombone và trumpet réo rít trong bài “Dấu Chân Kỷ Niệm” (Thúc Đăng) và giai điệu tango say sưa trong “Kiếp Nghèo” (Lam Phương) làm tôi nhớ đến những bản của Thanh Thúy, Hoàng Oanh và Phương Dung đã được thu âm trước năm 1975. Với giọng hát alto trong veo, lối hát mộc mạc, và cách phát âm rỏ ràng va nhẹ nhàng, Hà Vân thể hiện rất tốt những nhạc phẩm xưa, đặc biệt là “Về Đâu Mái Tóc Người Thương” (Quang Linh) và “Đà Lạt Hoàng Hôn” (Minh Kỳ).

Đã lâu mới được nghe một album nhạc trữ tình thật phê qua giọng hát một ca sỉ trẻ. Đó là nhờ sự đầu tư kỷ lưỡng và chịu chơi đúng điệu của Hà Vân.

Last night my three-year-old Đán scratched his private area and bawled out. I shined a flashlight on him and saw that he had rashes all over. He was having some allergic reactions. I took off his pants, picked him up, and my wife gave him some Benadryl. To prevent him from scratching himself, I put him down and blew some air to soothe him. He fell back to sleep, but when I stopped, he said, “Daddy, blow me.” That was the first time in my life I had to give a blow job.

Early today as we made way toward the boardwalk, we spotted a bunch of girls in bikinis in the opposite direction. Đán said to me, “Daddy, there’s a lot of ‘con chim.’” He meant to say birds, but you have to know Vietnamese to understand the other context.

Took the boys to see Inside Out. With a big bucket of popcorn and comfortable couches at Regal Cinema, they made it through the entire movie even though they didn’t get the concept at all. This is definitely another groundbreaking work from the creative minds at Pixar. The storyline and the execution are superb as always. So glad to see they continue to push the envelope.

2 in Love, a joint effort between pianist David Benoit and vocalist Jane Monheit, kicks off with “Barcelona Nights,” a groovy Latin-flavor that shows off Monheit’s chops for delivering a fast-tempo rhythm. “This Dance” and the tile track continue with the sensational bossa-nova sway. “Dragonfly” switches the vibe to a nimble waltz. But then the rest of the album turns into broadway and cinematic pop. Monheit turns into Celine Dion on “Fly Away.” While both Benoit and Monheit are extraordinary musicians and they could make anything together, I prefer their jazz collaboration.

Because my three-year-old son is obsessed with dinosaurs, I checked out Jurassic World first to see if it is not too much for him to watch. As expected, it is not my type of movie and it isn’t good either. I doubt that my little guy can sit through 2 hours. Now I feel OK that he can skip it. We’ll try to catch Inside Out instead.

With her new release, Currency of Man, Melody Gardot continues to push her craft to another level. Experimenting with the 70’s funk, soul, and gospel as the cinematic backdrop, she uses her voice and words to tell intriguing stories surrounding social and racial injustices.

The sensational “Preacherman” starts off with a choir chanting and kicks into an infectious funk groove. In her calm but anguish tone, she addresses racism: “Don’t recall the Lord sayin’ there’s a difference if you’re black or white / ‘Cause I believe in a world where we all belong and I’m so tired of seein’ every good man gone.” With the recent event of the Charleston shooting, this song captures the sentiment on race that still divides America today.

In the same vein, “Don’t Misunderstand,” which sports an earthy funk groove, references Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” on race. Gardot chants and reminds us that “We are who we are who we are / We do what we can when we can / We only have gotten this far now / so don’t misunderstand, don’t misunderstand who I am.”

On a different topic but related to social injustice, “She Don’t Know” addresses prostitution: “She don’t need no education when the streets are mean / he done seen a revelation now in her jeans / but she don’t know.”

Music wise, Melody Gardot’s Currency Of Man is as rich and expansive as Norah Jones’s Little Broken Heart, but Gardot’s lyrical content is much more daring. With her refined singing and adept storytelling, this is a huge leap as well as her best work up to date.

After moving to New York City for almost 35 years, the multi-talented pianist/vocalist, Elaine Elias, returns to her homeland to craft a collection of sultry, sophisticated, swaying records all Made in Brazil. Singing from English to Portuguese and blending samba rhythm with lush strings, Elias and her superb collaborators present the ultimate bossa-nova sensation. Whether reinterpreting classic ballads from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Ary Barroso or delivering her originals, Elias mastered the art of refined understatement and impeccable relaxation. This album is made to experience from start to finish, and preferably with a Caipirinha.

Tuần vừa rồi má bị té gãy tay. Bay giờ bị sưng rất nặng. Chắc phải mổ mới lành nhưng vì bị nhiễm trùng nên bác sĩ chưa dám mổ. Lớn tuổi rồi té thật nguy hiểm. Chị phải xin nghỉ làm (không biết bao lâu) để lo cho má.

Dạo này khá bận với cái dự án cuối cùng của việc học. Tuy rằng mùa học sắp tới mới bắt đầu nhưng tôi muốn làm trước để tới đó khỏi lo nhiều. Được bạn bè giúp đỡ nên tôi cảm thấy rất mai mắn. Nhất là bạn qua mạng chưa hề bao giờ gặp. Cám ơn bạn nhé.

Bây giờ không hiểu sao thằng con trai lớn nhõng nhẽo vô cùng. Ngày nào cũng nghe nó khóc. Lúc thì dành đồ chơi với em lúc thì nổi giận nếu không được theo ý muốn. Nó chỉ muốn được đồ chơi của thằng em mặt dù đồ chơi đó nó không bao giờ đụng tới. Tôi và vợ phải nhất đầu với nó. Nhiều lúc thấy nó tội nghiệp lắm. Có lẻ là anh lớn nên nó có cảm giác không được thương bằng thằng em nên tôi cố gắng rất nhiều để nó khỏi phải cảm thấy như vậy. Hy vọng nó sẽ hiểu được và thay đổi một ngày gần đây.

Tuần này được bà ngoại ở cùng nên thằng em rất thích. Đêm nào nó cũng chui vô phòng ngủ chung với bà. Sáng nào cũng phải lôi đầu nó dậy nó mới dậy. Lúc nào nó cũng sợ bà ngoại bỏ nó về New Jersey hay qua nhà bác nó ngủ. Thấy hai bà cháu gắn bó tôi vui.

Cũng đã lâu tôi không nói về bà xã. Nói tốm lại là tình hình yên ổn. Bả cũng khá bận trong công việc nhưng vẫn lo cho hai đứa nhỏ và đứa lớn này chu đáo. Tôi thấy mình cũng may mắn. Cuối tuần vừa rồi tôi đi dự hội nghị ở New York nên chở hết cả gia đình về nhà ngoại. Vợ chăm mấy đứa nhỏ để tôi đi. Tôi thì ham đi lắm. Hể trường chịu trả tiền thì tôi cứ đi để học hỏi. Bây giờ thì trường chỉ chịu trả tiền vé hội nghị thôi không trả gì khác nên tôi chỉ đi những chổ nào không tốn tiền ở và tiền vé máy bay.

Thú thật viết tiếng Việt khổ quá. Tôi phải tra tự điển hoặc dùng Google gần như mổi chữ. Nếu bạn đọc sai chính tả hoặc không hiểu được thông cảm nhé.

Fogarty’s book is not a complete grammar reference, but it does provide tips to help you overcome the tricky grammar usages. Her explanations are clear and to the point. Furthermore, she has done all the research for us and provides us the ones that are best to apply to our own writing. Surprisingly I understood most (if not all) the tips in the book, and yet I still struggle with grammar when I write. I need to try her proofreading method of reading my work backward.

Thật đáng tiếc cho một giọng ca baritone truyền cảm của Xuân Phú. Chẳng những giọng anh đẹp mà cách hát khá vững vàng và cộng thêm lối phát âm rỏ ràng. Nếu như Xuân Phú chịu đầu tư vào phần hòa âm phối khí thì anh có thể cho ra một sản phảm giá trị. Với album Đời Đá Vàng, anh ca lại những bài đã rất phổ biến của nhạc sĩ Vũ Thành An nhưng anh không đem lại cho người nghe những gì của riêng anh ngoài giọng hát tốt của mình. Phần hòa âm của Tuấn Phong chỉ để cho Xuân Phú hát đúng nhịp chứ không giúp được gì về phần nân cao nghệ thuật.
