Jefferies’s latest special clocks in an hour a half, and yet he managed to make every moment counts. Agree with him or not, the Australian comedian will make you think about the meaning of freedom in American. We claim to be the land of the free and yet we have one the highest rates of incarceration in the world. When it comes to assisted suicide, are we free to decide what we want to do with our live? Freedumb is streaming on Netflix so I’ll save the Trump jokes for you to enjoy.

Over the long weekend, I reworked Typographically Trịnh to take out typefaces served via Google Fonts. As much as I wanted to use some new faces from Google directory, its issue in Safari—missing Vietnamese fonts—makes the service unusable. I knew the issue way before I started Typographically Trịnh, but I wanted them to see the problem so they can resolve it. Sadly they still have not done anything.

Now I am forced to use only Typekit, which limits my choices for setting type in Vietnamese, but I know for sure that know for sure that it will display correctly everywhere. In addition, Typekit service is outstanding. I reported similar  issue a while ago and fixed it within a few days. Google Fonts, on the other hand, has done nothing for many months.

It’s a shame that they have a decent selection of Vietnamese typefaces, but they are not usable on the web. I really do hope they will resolve the issue soon. 

Dark Money unveils the startling secrets of the Koch brothers using their money and networks, including the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, to take control of our politic. Mayer’s investigative reporting is thorough and well-documented. Her writing is straightforward, accurate, and engaging. I didn’t think I could get through almost 400 pages about the Koch brothers and their agenda, but I could not put down the book. It’s a must-read for anyone who is interested in learning about how money influenced our political system.

Hôm qua ngày đầu tiên đưa Đạo đi học tiếng Việt qua trương trình VYEA (Vietnamese Youth Educational Association of Washington). Khóa học ba ngày một tuần từ 7:30 đến 9 giờ chiều. Lúc mới vào lớp Đạo hơi bỡ ngỡ nhưng khi đến giờ giải lao nó đó cùng thằng bạn mới chạy giởn khắp trường.

Trong lúc đám trẻ vào học thì người lớn đến hợp gặp gỡ cô hiệu trưởng và các thành viên của VYEA. Hôm qua là ngày khai giảng lớp hè tiếng Việt 2016 năm thứ 40. Tất cả thầy cô giáo và thành viên là tình nguyện. Thấy cộng đồng người Việt gắn bó cùng chung mục đích dạy con em tiếng Việt tôi vui và xúc động.

Đồng thời VYEA cũng có lớp dành cho phụ huynh nhưng dại đánh vần, Tai Chi, căn bản nhiếp ảnh. Tôi chắc chắn phải đăng ký vào lớp học đánh vần và có thể học Tai Chi cho vui.

I am excited to introduce Typographically Trịnh. This is an independent project that aims to highlight Vietnamese typography with my favorite quotes from Trịnh Công Sơn, whose philosophical lyrics I always find intriguing and inspiring.

My goal is simple. Each day I will pick out a quote to design with my own understanding and interpretation of his words. Take a look at the first four pieces I have created. Although Trịnh Công Sơn had written over 600 songs and I only found 244 songs, I will only select 100 quotes that speak to me the most. Why 100? I wanted to do #The100DayProject to help myself stayed creative. I also just want to build websites.

Although I have all the basic structure (HTML and CSS) set up, I won’t see myself creating the pages on a daily basis. I will take my time to fulfill the 100 designs I set out to do. The process will take longer, but I am OK with that. Even though this project has been in the back of my mind for a while, it is started to take shape only after I saw the redesign of Google Fonts. The new directory has a number of decent fonts that support Vietnamese characters. I will also use Typekit for this project.

I am so glad to see that my book on Vietnamese typography has been useful to type designers. I am hoping to see more typefaces that have support for the Vietnamese language. I hope that a project like Typographically Trịnh will motivate type designers to consider extending their fonts to support Vietnamese.

Tưởng có một cơ hội mới để tiến tới nhưng bị thất vọng. Hơi bùi ngùi mộ tí nhưng không bị rung động. Tương lai còn dài nhiều cơ hội khác sẽ đến. Tôi sẽ không bị nản lòng. Tôi sẽ cố vươn lên. Biết rằng hy vọng càng nhiều thì thất vọng càng lớn nhưng tôi không bị mất mát gì. Tôi sẽ tiếp tục nuôi dưỡng hy vọng của mình.

Ngày xưa tôi rất dễ bị nhạy cảm với cái tự tin của mình. Nhưng giờ đã khác. Với vợ con lúc nào cũng đứng về phía tôi, tôi sẽ không mất cái tự tin. Vì họ tôi sẽ cố gắng lên. Vì họ tôi không thể nào bị ngã gục. Vì họ tôi sẽ phấn đấu. Có họ tôi sẽ không bị tuyệt vọng. Đừng tuyệt vọng tôi ơi đừng tuyệt vọng.

Hôm qua tôi quây lại phố nhỏ Poughkeepsie, nơi tôi đã sống và bắt đầu sự nghiệp. Tôi đi thăm lại căn nhà cũ tôi từng ở trọ, ra công viên và bờ sông xưa, ngồi lại chiếc băng ghế mà lần đầu tiên tôi lấy can đảm nắm lấy tay người bạn. Thế là cuộc tình mới nẩy nở.

Poughkeepsie là một thành phố rất vắng vẻ và lúc tôi có nhiều thời gian nên những con đường tôi nhớ rất rõ những chi tiết nhỏ. Tôi đã xa nơi này gần mười năm nhưng mọi thứ không thay đổi nhiều lắm.

Tôi ghé lại trường đại học Vassar thăm những đồng nghiệp cũ. Một số đông cũng vẫn còn làm ở đó. Họ rất dễ thương. Những người bạn tuy hằng ngày chúng tôi vẫn trao đổi qua social networks nhưng gặp mặt vẫn thấy vui hơn.

Tuy được những giờ phút yên tỉnh một mình tôi đã nhớ đến đám nhỏ. Ngày mai tôi sẽ quây về với gia đình tuy ồn ào nhưng êm ấm.

I am in NYC this week for Typographics 2016. I am away from my family just for days and the kids acted like I’ll be gone for a long time. Đạo and Đán each drew me a Hypno-shroom, my favorite character“Plants vs. Zombies,” to take with me so I can remember them. They are so sweet.

Yesterday I took a beginner type design workshop yesterday with Matteo Bologna, a talented, hilarious Italian-American designer who cusses like a sailor. The workshop introduced students to creating type using Glyphs. Matteo managed to get two people from the Glyphs app to support us. Even though I had not used it until yesterday, it appears to be friendly and intuitive. Although I wish the workshop focused more on demonstrating how to draw letters than focusing on the app, it was an eye opening experience.

Today I am heading back to Poughkeepsie to visit the good old friends and colleagues at Vassar. I am also looking forward to the conference on Friday and Saturday.

I have been touching up ON Designs a bit. The logo is now contained in a square box. The text face is now set in Arno Pro, another beautiful serif by Robert Slimbach. The large display heading is now set in Eloquent JF Pro by Jason Walcott.

I’ve been practicing simple designs since 1999. I honed my craft by reading William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White and listening to Miles Davis. While Strunk and White taught me the value of taking out unnecessary elements, Davis taught me the important of white space—what you leave out is as essential as what you put in.
