White—that shaped one of the most influential publications in the world. Vinciguerra’s writing is scrupulous, fair, and entertaining. I bought this book for my kids to learn a bit about the Vietnamese legends and folktales I loved in my childhood. Despite the gorgeous illustrations by Nguyễn Thị Hợp and Nguyễn Đông, the kids show no interest yet; therefore, I read the stories myself. The stories are retold by Nguyễn Thị Minh Phước who learned about these stories from parents. While I appreciate her effort for making these stories available in English, I still prefer the Vietnamese versions. In addition, I don’t know why she left out the mystical legend of the Dragon King Lạc Long Quân and the Fairy Princess Âu Cơ.

I just launched a new section on Vietnamese Typography called samples, in which I create individual pages to showoff Vietnamese typesetting.
So far I had created a sample of a short story, article, restaurant menu , and recipe page. I also featured Thơ Mưa to demonstrate poetry.
One of the reasons I created the sample page is to replace the literary example section. Although no one pointed out to me, I was not sure if the literary examples were useful to type designers. As a result, I retired the section.
I am planning on adding more samples. If you have any suggestion, please let me know.
Sau năm ngày nghỉ ngơi bên bờ biển hôm nay đi làm lại ngày đầu tiên. Nói nghỉ ngơi chứ thật ra là đi giữ đám nhóc. Ngày nào cũng phải rầy la tụi nó hết. Tôi đã tự hứa là đi chơi không muốn la rầy nhưng không lớn tiếng không thằng nào chịu nghe. Nói nhỏ một lần, hai lần, ba lần, bốn lần cũng không.
Có hôm thằng Đạo bị phạt ở lại nhà thuê không cho đi ra boardwalk chơi. Nó nhảy nhót như điên nhưng rồi khi dịu lại thấy nó thật là dễ thương. Lần sau bão làm gì là làm ngay không cằn nhằn cự nự nữa. Thằng Đán thì cũng quậy nhưng cũng nghe lời một chút. Cái thằng này có cái miệng không biết phải làm sao ngưng. Tối ngày cứ chọc ghẹo thằng anh họ. Biết thằng kia mít ướt nhưng cũng chọc hoài cho thằng đó giận la khóc ầm ỷ. La nó thì nó ngưng nhưng một chút lại chọc lại. Hôm ra biển thấy một bà Mỹ béo đang ngồi, nó nói bằng tiếng Anh, “Bà này có cái bụng béo quá.” Hên là bả không nghe.
Một mặt thì tôi muốn nó biểu lộ ra cảm nghĩ của nó. Còn mặt khác thì tôi không muốn nó thấy gì nói đó. Không biết nên phải dạy nó thế nào. Có lẽ khi còn nhỏ tôi bị hạn chế về những gì không tế nhị nên có nghĩ cũng không dám nói. Bây giờ cũng thế. Nhiều lúc bực bội nhưng không nói ra được. Thế rồi để đó lâu lâu bùng nổ. Nhiều lúc không muốn nghĩ đến những chuyện bứt rứt đó nhưng làm không được. Tôi tự biết mình không phải là người rộng lượng hay cao thượng. Nhưng tôi cũng biết chừng mực không quá ích kỷ và không quá hẹp hòi. Tôi không phải là người tính toán nhưng cũng không phải là người quá phung phí. Tôi không thích lợi dụng người khác và rất bực bội khi thấy người khác bị lợi dụng. Nhiều khi tự nhũ đó không phải là chuyện của mình cần gì phải bực nhưng tính tôi vậy. Thấy những gì không công bình thì không thoải máy.
