Here comes a moment of kiss up. One of the things I love about my wife is that she always finds new, interesting music for me to listen and write. Her latest discovery is Korean singer Youn Sun Nah. The first time listening to Nah’s latest release, Lento, and I am completely hypnotized. Nah’s style is expressive, eclectic and quite eccentric.

The album kicks off with a soft, intimate title track, in which her soulful voice is accompanied with just a fingerpicking guitar. Then “Lament” gives a glance of her emotional progression. She starts out low and builds up the tension like a fighter who’s not ready to give up. The album takes a surprise detour in “Momento Magico,” in which she uses her scatting skills to duo the guitar. With the Latin groove backing them up, the experience is just electrifying. Then the album returns and dips further into the soul-stirring territory in a reinterpretation of Stan Jones’ “Ghost Riders In The Sky.” Near the end, she distorts her voice (without the help of Auto-Tune) as if she has been possessed.

Youn Sun Nah is quite something else. In Lento, she demonstrates not only her singing ability, but also her sensational artistry. Highly recommended.

Joshua Redman’s Walking Shadows is stunningly relaxing, and yet nowhere near smooth jazz. The album sets off with a lush orchestral reinterpretation of Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II’s “The Folks Who Live on the Hill.” His hauntingly clear saxophone weaves in and out of the string orchestration like ghost passing through glass. With Billy Strayhorn’s lyrical “Lush Life,” Redman shows off his fine, articulated chops in his second solo. In “Let It Be,” Redman sings Beatles’ lovely melody with his sax. The sophisticated beauty of the album is courtesy of the jazz-with-strings arrangements as well as the support from his friend and pianist Brad Mehldau.

After clients and I agreed on our contract, I would go through the preliminary process with them to get the project started. Although I have been doing this with each of my client, it only occurred to me last week, as I as doing the same thing with a new client, that I should put together a list of tasks my clients must complete in order for me to do my part. From now on, I just refer them to this post.

Do you have a domain name?

If not, you need to register your domain name. I use GoDaddy for all my domains. Even though I have heard not-so-good stories about GoDaddy, I haven’t have any problem with it. If you don’t trust GoDaddy, use Network Solutions or Hover. I heard good things about them.

Do you have a hosting provider?

If not, you need to sign up for a hosting plan. I highly recommend Lunarpages. I haven been with the company for over ten years and very happy with its service. For most of my clients, the Lunix basic hosting is sufficient. At the time of this writing, the plan is starting at $4.95 a month. The only extra add-on you need is “Premium Restore Service.” The extra cost of $1.50 a month is definitely worthwhile just in case something goes wrong with your site and needed a quick restoration. If you need other plans or services, we can discuss first before making the purchase.

Do you want to track your web site?

Tracking your site is optional, but I highly recommend it. Google Analytics allows you to see how many people visited your site. Where they are coming from and so much more. If you already have a Gmail account, signing up with GA is very easy.

Cám ơn bạn. Đúng vậy Doanh viết chính tả sai rất nhiều. Bà xã cũng nhắc nhở nhiều lần và bản thân cũng muốn sữa chửa nhưng thời gian có hạng. Ngày xưa thường thì viết xong rồi đưa cho bà xã kiểm soát lại dùm. Nhưng với con cái bà xã cũng khá bận rộn nên không muốn làm phiền. Vả lại khi viết xong một post thì chỉ muốn publish rồi đi ngủ chứ cũng không đọc lại.

Doanh cũng rất thích những bài viết của bạn. Bạn viết tiếng Việt hay và sâu sắc lắm. Doanh cũng học hỏi được khá nhiều. Mong rằng mai mốt sẽ có dịp trao đổi với nhau về âm nhạc Việt Nam.

Hôm nay cùng gia đình đi chùa dự lễ Mẹ. Trong lúc những Phật tử ăn chay thưởng thức nhạc sống với Y Phụng, Chí Tâm và Ngọc Đan Thanh thì có một nữ đệ tử rất siêng năng đi vòng quanh thu rác rưới. Cô bận bộ đồ nâu với bước đi khập khiễng dường như chân cô bị tật làm tôi nhớ đến chị Mỹ Châu. Chị cũng bị tật ở chân và đã đến chùa lúc nhỏ.

Lúc còn ấu thơ tôi được ở trong chùa. Không nhớ rõ là ở bao lâu nhưng những ngày tháng yên tỉnh đó vẫn ở bên tôi mãi. Lúc đó tôi vẫn chưa đi mẫu giáo nên có lẽ là bốn hoặc năm tuổi.

Công việc hằng ngày của tôi là thức dậy và gõ chuông cho Sư Bà niệm phật. Sao đó thì ăn sáng rồi cùng Sư Cô và chị Mỹ Châu đi tưới cây và hoa. Rồi thì được Sư Bà dạy học còn chị Châu thì đi đến trường.

Sau khi ăn trưa thì ngủ một giấc rồi cùng chị Mỹ Châu tung tăng khắp chùa. Có lúc thì chặt dừa uống. Có lúc thì hái me ngọt ăn. Chị Châu rất khéo tay. Chị làm được diều, chong chóng, và hình thú bằng lá dừa. Tôi vẫn nhớ rõ chị Châu phải chạy để diều tuy chị bị tật ở chân.

Chơi xong thì đi tưới hoa và cây trái quanh chùa. Có lúc thì dọn dẹp, lau chùi trong chùa. Tôi rất thích phụ Sư Cô và chị Châu vì sau khi xong việc Sư Cô thưởng cho xem đèn Hòa Quang. Lúc đó tôi rất thích được xem các đèn mầu rực rỡ và tỏa sáng. Sau đó tôi lại được gõ chuông cho Sư Bà tụng kinh. Tụng kinh xong thì đến giờ ăn chiều.

Cuộc sống lúc ấy thật giản dị và bình an. Trước khi rời chùa về nhà, tôi đã nhận ra được sự buồn bã và chút hờn giận trên khuôn mặt chị Mỹ Châu. Dường như chị ấy không muốn đứa em này phải rời xa chị.

Sau thời gian đó thì tôi đã bị thế giới bên ngoài cám dỗ. Từ phim Hồng Kông đến bi da đến video game, cuộc sống của tôihoàn toàn thay đổi. Tiền mẹ cho ăn sáng, tôi nhịn để nộp vào bi da hay video game. Dần dần tôi bị lôi vào cuộc sống ham chơi đua đòi.

Cũng may là tôi được sang Mỹ và làm lại cuộc sống mới thêm lần nữa. Tuy không vướng vào tánh hư tật xấu nhưng cuộc sống lúc nào cũng chạy theo thời gian và danh vọng. Tuy cuộc sống hiện tại tương đối tốt, tôi không được sự bình thản như những ngày tháng sống ở chùa. Tuy nhiên mỗi khi đến bất cứ chùa nào tôi đều được cảm giác thật nhẹ nhàng thoải mái. Dường như nơi ấy đã từng là nhà của tôi và tôi được viếng thăm lại căn nhà xưa.

At 80, Wayne Shorter is still making daring music. We met with Dao’s teachers and counselor to discuss his uncontrollable tantrum. When he doesn’t get what he wants, he loses himself. He does, however, feel remorse when he calms down. He then realizes what he had done wrong and apologizes.

For his fourth birthday, we gave him a really nice train set. He can only play with it when he’s being good. We had been firm; therefore, he wouldn’t get to play it if he misbehaved that day. It worked so far.

The counselor suggested that we continue using that method, but also take a step further. Giving him stickers when he’a good and use a calendar to keep track of how many days he’s being good. Be more specific with him. Tell him what had he done well. When he’s not behaving, tell him that we love him, but we don’t love what he did.

When playing with Dan, he often takes toys away from his little brother. Dan now can defends himself; therefore, he doesn’t easily let go of what he has on his hands. His teacher suggestion is to assign ownership to each boy. Write their name on the toys and they have to share if one wants to play with the other’s toy.

The teachers and counselor gave us many advices to help Dao controls himself. We are very grateful and deeply appreciate their love and support for Dao.

Photoshop and Illustrator are the major tools for web designers even though they both are capable of doing things way beyond the web. Fireworks combines the two, but focuses specifically for the web. Fireworks is probably all that is needed for most web designers if they don’t have the luxury of using Photoshop and Illustrator.

As a result, Adobe isn’t going to open-source Fireworks to compete against it own products. Just my two cents, but I hope I am wrong.

Now that I am done with school projects and freelance gigs, I get a chance to catch up on some NetFlix. I am so glad to discover Louie Anderson’s Big Baby Boomer. The man is hilarious. No one can joke about food more authentic than a fat man could. Almost everything he thinks about is related to food. Even the word “catch up” makes him think of food. His routine was calm, relaxed and curse-free. One of the most memorable lines was, “When you’re young, you take drugs that would kill you. When you’re old, you take drugs that would keep you alive.” Definitely looking forward to his works in the future.
