Haters Back Off!

Haters Back Off!, one of Netflix’s latest original series, is bizarre, off-putting, and cruel. The first eight episodes introduce Miranda Sings (Colleen Ballinger), who is an aspiring singer with extreme confident but no talent, and her dysfunctional family. As uncomfortable and cringe-worthy to watch Miranda’s full-of-herself-yet-clueless personality, I enjoyed its first season. There’s something humanness underneath that self-destructiveness. I definitely looking forward to the next season.

Trump’s Disturbing Comments on Young Girls

Emily Crockett:

It’s clear from Trump’s words and actions that he relates to women mostly by objectifying them. If he doesn’t like a woman, he calls her ugly. If he does, he calls her beautiful, suggests he’d like to sleep with her, or says that he would date her.

But disturbingly, this objectifying tendency also seems to extend to young girls.

Supervillain of Sexism

Erin Gloria Ryan:

Trump is a veritable buffet of sexism. A sexist supervillain. A library of chauvanism. An everything bagel of misogyny. He’s a one-stop shop for proof that a host of feminist issues are not made up complaints. He’s a human department store that sells pay disparity and creepy old man grabbiness. For women who have faced sexism for their entire lives, seeing it in a national figure with a devoted following of millions is dreadful. But at least now when men want to know what sexism looks like, women have a larger-than-life example at the ready.

Vietnamese-Americans Switch to Democrat Party

FiveThirtyEight’s Farai Chideya:

Vietnamese-Americans, who number nearly 2 million, with especially large concentrations in California and Texas, are part of the larger narrative of Asian-Americans who have switched party affiliations and votes from Republican to Democratic.

According to the National Asian American Survey, 46% of Vietnamese-Americans support Hillary and 20% support Trump.

Five Years at the Law School

Yesterday someone congratulated me on LinkedIn. I can’t believe it has already been five years since I joined the law school.

These days my role has extended beyond web development. I am the go-to guy for most of the design and marketing materials. I am juggling five to six projects at a time ranging from setting up a new site for a new center, laying out an eight-page program for an event, creating banner to recruit students, making landing pages and forms for digital marketing efforts, coding email newsletters to securing the web servers.

My workload can be overwhelming, but the support from my supervisor allow me stay sane. Working full time with three kids is a big challenge, particularly with time management. I deeply appreciate the flexibility that she has given me. In that regard, I don’t think I can find it anywhere else. In return, I do my work whenever necessary—even at three in the morning.

Another rewarding aspect of my work is being around the wonderful colleagues. They always make sure that we have a friendly environment to do our job.

The Journal Endorses Hillary

Editorial board:

How else to explain that the Republican Party has nominated a lunatic? The party of Lincoln and Reagan has inexplicably advanced a presidential candidate who is manifestly unqualified to handle sharp objects, let alone be entrusted with the most powerful position on Earth.

But the less said about Trump the better. The very notion that he is on the ballot is an insult to our democracy.

Vote for Hillary Clinton for president.

The Register-Guard Endorses Hillary

Editorial board:

Clinton is among the best-prepared candidates ever to seek the presidency, having served eight years in the U.S. Senate and four years as secretary of state… Trump, by contrast, would be the first president in American history with no record of service in either elective office or the military.

A Different Perspective On Asian Parenting

Kate Chia writes:

[T]he best thing they ever did for me was to discourage my perfectionist tendencies – indeed, when I was in elementary school, my dad offered to buy me a present if I got a C.

She continues:

I think it was my parents’ lack of emphasis on grades that gave me room to foster my own desire for achievements. I developed a strong work ethic of my own accord, instead of doing it to placate my family.

She concludes:

He gave me two invaluable gifts: the space to cultivate my own desire for excellence, and the healthy psyche to pursue it.

Most Asian parents are tough on their kids. I want to, but I can’t. My wife once told me that she was stressed out because our seven-year-old’s reading level is two out of four and our almost-five-year-old doesn’t even want to recognize the alphabet letters. Her dream of her kids becoming doctors seems to be unlikely. I consoled her that as long as they won’t become criminals or end up in jail, I am fine with whatever they want to be. Yes, I am setting the bar that low and I am glad to see that Mr. Chia had done the same and it worked out for his kid.

Mat Marquis: JavaScript for Web Designers

Like many beginner’s book on JavaScript, this one offers clear explanation of the basics including data types, conditional statements, and loops, but doesn’t provide practical exercise on how to use them in actual webpages. The only chapter that does that is on DOM scripting; therefore, I don’t find the book to be useful. If you want to learn the basic concepts and then put them to use with step-by-step instructions, I recommend John Pollock’s JavaScript: A Beginner’s Guide instead.

Trump Raped His First Wife Over His Hair

Jane Mayer:

In [Harry] Hurt’s account, Trump was furious that a “scalp reduction” operation he’d undergone to eliminate a bald spot had been unexpectedly painful. Ivana had recommended the plastic surgeon. In retaliation, Hurt wrote, Trump yanked out a handful of his wife’s hair, and then forced himself on her sexually. Afterward, according to the book, she spent the night locked in a bedroom, crying; in the morning, Trump asked her, “with menacing casualness, ‘Does it hurt?’ ” Trump has denied both the rape allegation and the suggestion that he had a scalp-reduction procedure. Hurt said that the incident, which is detailed in Ivana’s deposition, was confirmed by two of her friends.

Quite disturbing.
