Chủ Nhật chợt thức giấc lúc 4:45 sáng. Định ngủ lại nhưng mê đọc cho hết quyển sách. Đến sáng đầu óc nặng nề còn thân thể rã rời. Đến lúc tụi nhỏ dậy là chịu hết nỗi. Thế là cả ngày lừ đừ như người mất hồn. Ngày xưa thức luyện phim chưởng sáng đêm ngày nầy qua ngày nọ không sao. Ngày nay thức sớm đọc sách cũng tê tái cả người.

Mấy hôm nay thèm ăn phở bò và uống bia nên chân bị tê tê. Giờ phải nạp dấm táo vô để chữa gout. Cuộc đời thật khốn nạn. Ngày xưa uống gin và tonic ngọt lịm đã khát. Ngày nay chỉ uống dấm táo chua bỏ mẹ. Mà không uống thì khỏi đi luôn.

Gần đây lười nên ăn ở ngoài nhiều. Hai thằng con lớn hết ăn Chinese buffet thì ăn sushi buffet. Hết ăn phở thì ăn dim sum. Hết ăn mì Korean thì ăn mì Nhật. Một tuần ăn ở ngoài hai hoặc ba lần. Tụi nó thì ăn ngon lành. Còn mình thì vừa ăn vừa trông thằng nhỏ. Ăn vội ăn vàng. Khi chúng nó ăn không hết thì mình phải ăn đồ dư. Ngày xưa ăn bao nhiêu tiêu hết bấy nhiêu. Ngày nay ăn bao nhiêu vẫn còn đọng lại bấy nhiêu. Tôi sắp theo gót Quang Lê rồi.

Hồi còn trung học xin được việc làm ở tiệm cho mướng phim Video Update cũng chỉ để mượn phim porn về xem. Sợ bị mẹ khám phá nên xem chui xem nhủi vậy mà phê. Ngày nay chỉ cần mở internet lên là có vậy mà chẳng xi-nhê gì cả. Cũng không lạ lắm vì bây giờ thèm đồ thật hơn đồ giả.

Viết chơi cho vui thôi. Viết bậy bạ nữa là không còn gì cả mà mơ.

Julie Yip-Williams who had blogged extensively about her struggle with Stage IV colon cancer passed away on March 19, 2018. Ms. Yip-Williams was blind since her birth in Vietnam. She escaped the country on a fishing boat, received a bachelor’s degree in English and Asian Studies from Williams College, graduated from Harvard Law School, married a white man, and gave birth to two girls. Her blog, which started in 2013 when she was diagnosed with cancer, will turn into a memoir. Random House will publish it later this year or early next year. I am looking forward to reading it.

Meanwhile, thinking globally but acting locally is the little bit that we can personally do. Teaching young people how to set up sites and maintain their own identities is one good way to increase and reinforce the open web. And for those of us who are no longer young, writing more under our own banner may model a better way for those who are to come.

With the help of Neil Martinez-Belkin, Gucci Mane has written a frank, compelling autobiography. Gucci grew up in a drug-infested environment. He sold drugs and hooked on lean himself. He went in and out of prisons and spent time in solitary confinements. What kept him from falling down was his music. He was one of the innovators of trap music. On the pages, Gucci lays out his chaotic, extravagant lifestyle. It’s a hell of a story.

Đúng là quả báo. Ngày xưa được nhẹ tay nhổ từng cọng râu và dịu dàng bức từng cọng tóc bao nhiêu thì bây giờ bị thằng con nó mạnh tay bấy nhiêu. Ai cũng chỉ có một thời được sướng. Nên nắm lấy cơ hội vì “Tuổi xuân là bao chẳng đợi thời gian vụt tới / Rồi mai đây trăng tà soi bóng ngó quanh lại còn ai.”

I love this little book. In addition to being clear and concise, Janis Bell’s grammar guide focuses on common mistakes I still make. In each explanation and each example, she writes as if she had read my mind. What I have found most effective is the way she teaches us to remember certain conventions such as when to use who and whom or lie and lay. It’s a must-have grammar reference.

One word to describe Barry Jenkins’s epic film has to be resilience. It takes resilience for a gay black boy who lived with a poor, single, drug-addicted mother to become a tough-yet-sweet young man. It’s an aesthetically delightful watch.

Allen’s poignant memoir recounts the troubled life and tragic death of her young cousin Michael Allen. At fifteen, Michael found guilty of carjacking and sentenced as an adult to eleven years in prison. While serving his time, he fell in love with Bree, a transgender. Released at twenty-six, Michael struggled to move on. The tumultuous relationship with Bree ended his life. In addition to her personal story, Allen provides insightful account of the injustice system of incarceration in America, particularly toward black males. It’s a devastating, informing read.

By combining William Strunk, Jr., and E.B. White’s The Elements of Style and Williams Zinsser’s On Writing Well, Ms. Lamb offers an indispensable guide for business writings including emails, résumé, and proposals. I tend to read books on grammar and writing every now and then just to remind myself the craft of the English language. This one is a good refresher.
