I didn’t know who Hamilton de Holanda and Gonzalo Rubalcaba were, but their extraordinary Collab blew me away. While Holanda is an innovative mandolinist, Rubalcaba is a renowned pianist, whose style is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Together they created captivating synergies of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz on such as the exhilarating “Blues Landvall”, the energizing “Mandalagh,” and the mesmerizing “Flying Chicken.” On the vocal version of “Incompatibilidade de gênios,” João Bosco joins the duo. Although Bosco switches between word and wordless singing, he seems to scat the entire song to my foreign ears. I enjoyed this album immensely.

Nguyễn Thùy Linh phát âm tiếng Anh rất chuẩn. Nghe cô hát nhạc Mỹ không biết cô là người Việt. “Crazy he calls me” là một trong những ca khúc nổi tiếng của cố ca sĩ Billie Holiday, tuy nhiên Nguyễn Thùy Linh hát giống Madeline Poireaux hơi là Holiday.

Giọng cô có chất khói nên hát nhạc jazz nghe rất nồng nàn. Với “Till there was you”, cô khoác lên chiếc áo bossa nova đầy vẻ khoái lạc. Với “It’s always you” của Chet Baker, cô uyển chuyển nhè nhẹ với nhịp điệu swing lãng mạn. “Đêm hôm qua”, song ca cùng Thắng (Ngọt), là ca khúc đầu tiên tôi được nghe cô hát tiếng Việt. Album này chỉ có 4 ca khúc thu live.

Tôi muốn nghe cô hát thêm tiếng Việt và tìm được một single cô covers “Bây giờ tháng mấy” của nhạc sĩ Từ Công Phụng cũng theo nhạc jazz. Cô hát tiếng Việt rất rõ. Lợi thế của cô là đôi tai nghệ sĩ và năng khiếu ngôn ngữ.

Hoàng Minh Châu là một ca nhạc sĩ trẻ tự hát những sáng tác của mình. “Ước mơ nhỏ xinh”, bài mở đầu cho The First Album của cô, nhắn nhủ chúng ta hãy “Buông đi ưu tư, buông những gấp gáp trong đời thường để bình yên / Bình yên đôi khi ở trong tâm bão kia”. Cô ca nhỏ nhẹ với tiếng đàn acoustic guitar.

Ngược lại với “Ước mơ nhỏ xinh”, “Váy hoa nhí (Summertime)” trẻ trung hơn với dịp dance beat. Ca từ của cô cũng dí dỏm với ngôn ngữ Việt Anh: “Em có muốn uống latte coffee? / Nước cam hay trân châu Ô long kem cheese”.

“Son” trở lại với giai điệu ballad nhẹ nhàng. Cùng với tiếng keyboard và guitar, cô vu vơ hát, “Em yêu son còn tôi thích âm nhạc / Tôi yêu em vậy nên tôi sẽ hát / Cho em bài ca về những thứ em yêu / Là lá là la lá la là”. Chẳng những hát, cô còn đọc rap với cách flow thỏ thẻ.

Album đầu tay của Hoàng Minh Châu ngắn gọn nhưng có triển vọng về lâu dài.

To me these blog posts are huge wastes of time and are incredibly time consuming for me even though I type mindlessly and don’t even revise my writing (meaning they should be quick because i’m just speeding through them).
