I love reading The New Yorker; therefore, I am thrilled to check out its new TV show. The shows are based on the contents from the magazine. I just finished watching season one episode five and so far so good, especially the short documentaries. You can watch it with Amazon Prime.
In his excellent essay, “The New Web Typography,” Robin Rendle defines three principles of web typography:
- We must prioritise the text over the font, or semantics over style.
- We ought to use and/or make tools that reveal the consequences of typographic decisions.
- We should acknowledge that web typography is only as strong as its weakest point.
Must-read for designers.
This site has gone through some minor changes again. I brought back the sidebar again on larger screens. I was not quite happy with the previous change. Without the sidebar, there is simply too much whitespace. The new change is inspired by the The Washington Post I picked up this morning when I dropped my kid off to daycare. I think I am satisfied with this version, but you never know. I may make more changes later on. The typography feels just right. The colors are muted enough. The sections of the layout are separated by gray lines. I hope you enjoy it before I change it again.

Riêng tôi quê hương vẫn là nơi tôi được sinh ra và lớn lên. Tuy đã sống trên đất nước Mỹ hai mươi sáu năm, những kỷ niệm của tuổi ấu thơ vẫn không hề phai. Khi slideshow “Bonjour Vietnam” lan truyền khắp nơi, tôi trả lời phỏng vấn với một tờ Việt Nam rằng quê hương luôn ở trong tim tôi và không ai có thể lấy đi quê hương của tôi được. Đến giờ tôi vẫn giữ như thế.
Trong tương lai tôi có thể chết và chôn trên đất Mỹ nhưng quê hương tôi luôn gắn bó với Việt Nam. Mỗi người có lối suy nghĩ riêng của họ. Có lẽ họ muốn xóa đi những quá khứ đau buồn hay không muốn giữ lại kỹ niệm đau khổ. Cái mâu thuẫn là quê hương không còn nữa nhưng vẫn về Việt Nam cưới vợ.
Việc dạy dỗ con cái bay giờ khác hẳn với ngày xưa, nhất là trong gia đình người Việt ở Mỹ. Ngày xưa tôi chưa bao giờ dám hỗn hào với cha mẹ. Có lần làm trái lời ba đã bị phang vài cây củi. Mẹ tôi phải đứng ra cang thiệp. Vậy mà bây giờ con cái nó đập ba mẹ như kẻ thù mỗi khi nống giận.
Lúc thằng Đạo ba bốn tuổi nó đã bắt đầu đánh và cào. Nhiều lần nói không lọt lỗ tai nên tôi khẽ tay nó. Vài lần mỗi khi nó đưa tay ra định đánh nhưng nó nhớ hậu quả nên rút tay lại. Bây giờ thằng em đánh nó, nó chỉ chạy mà không đánh trả lại. Tôi cũng đang dạy thằng em đễ cho nó không giận lên là đánh.
Sách vở và bác sĩ nhi đồng ở Mỹ khuyên rằng không nên đánh con vì nó sẽ nghĩ hung bạo là chuyện thường. Lúc đầu tôi cũng nghỉ thế nhưng khi con cái đánh cha mẹ mà cha mẹ cũng để cho nó đánh cho nên nó cũng nghỉ hung bạo là chuyện thường. Chuyện dạy dỗ con cái là quyền cá nhân của cha mẹ không phải chuyện của tôi. Nhưng khi đứa nhỏ đó không chỉ đánh cha mẹ nó mà luôn cả người thân tôi thấy không ổn.
Tôi không muốn con mình đánh ai hết nhưng cũng không muốn tụi nó bị người khác đánh.
The new redesign lasted three days. Last night, I changed the design again. The sidebar feels cluttered; therefore, I went back to one column. In addition, I can’t seem to use sans serif for body text; therefore, I return to one of my reading faces Adobe Text Pro by Robert Slimbach. The color scheme stays the same.
I’ll continue to tweak and fine-tune it until I find something inspiring. That’s the beauty of having and designing your own site. Yesterday I read a fascinating article called, “The Secret Lives of Tumblr Teens” by Elspeth Reeve. The sad thing is that these kids worked so hard to get a million followers and completely lost their site one day without a warning. Tumblr just shut down their blog. This is the biggest reason I don’t trust a third-party site with my content.
