The Vicious Sean Spicer

Melissa McCarthy nailed her impersonation of the jackass who is White House Press Secretary. I couldn’t stand a second watching the real guy, but loved every second of McCarthy’s performance. She didn’t just mocked him; she became him. Thank goodness for Saturday Night Lives in these dark days.

Resistance

Adam Gopnik:

Resistance rises from the street, but also from within the system, as it should, with judicial stays and State Department dissenters. Opposing bad governments with loud speech, unashamed argument, and public demonstration is not the part that’s off the normal grid: it’s the pro-American part, exactly what the Constitution foresees and protects. Dissent is not courageous or exceptional. It is normal—it’s Madisonian, it’s Hamiltonian. It’s what we’re supposed to do.

Go Falcons

Although I don’t give a shit about the Super Bowl, I am rooting for the Falcons this time. Fuck Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and their deflated balls. Fucking cheaters and authoritarian lovers, they are no patriots.

Tomi Got Schooled

In her appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Tomi Lahren showed that she is nothing more than another loud, ignorant, and thoughtless Trump supporter. She got schooled by Maher, Jason Kander, Michael Eric Dyson, and Rick Wilson. On reverse-racism, which Lahren believes it’s true, Wilson shot back, “Since I’m a conservative and not a Trump person, let me say this: That’s absurd. That’s fucking crazy.” This blondie is as annoying as Ann Coulter and Kellyanne Conway, but without the experience.

A Failing President

Terence Szuplat:

Trump has already muzzled himself as a credible voice for America on the world stage. Even if they were inclined to do so, neither Trump nor senior officials in his Administration will have the moral authority to urge other nations to guarantee equal treatment for women, or for religious and ethnic minorities; or to accept desperate refugees from war-torn countries; or to respect a free press. A leader who stokes mistrust and fear at home will not be able to inspire people to high ideals abroad.

Government Against Gay America

Andrew Solomon:

There have been waves of anti-gay prejudice for centuries, of course. But one crucial difference now is that many of us have children. My husband and I have tried to explain to our children what is going on, but I would, at the same time, like to protect them from the reality that the people who now run the show would invalidate our kind of family.

Support Facts

Michael Specter:

How many of our country’s schoolteachers must consider, every day, whether to explain to their students that the President is a liar? The alternative—simply accepting those lies—would be devastating. It would change our language and change us, if we let it.… Unfortunately, that world is now upon us. Facts deserve our support. And lies do not.

Well said!

Gone with the Fascist

It’s unfortunate for the nation, but good for me. I no longer have to put up with the idiotic bullshit. I could have sucked it up and went along, but I stood by my principles. I could not let them overpower me. I fought even though I put myself at risk. I did not get any support as promised. Although the broad is gone, the jackass is still remained. I’ll just do what I have to do to survive. I am just a tiny fish swimming in a polluted ocean. What more can I do?

President Trump is not America!

Nicholas Kristof:

Whenever an extremist in the Muslim world does something crazy, people demand that moderate Muslims step forward to condemn the extremism. So let’s take our own advice: We Americans should now condemn our own extremist.

In that spirit, I hereby apologize to Muslims. The mindlessness and heartlessness of the travel ban should humiliate us, not you. Understand this: President Trump is not America!
